"No Student Should Suffer for Leadership Failures" – Obi Condemns UNICAL Dental Crisis, Urges FG to Act.

Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, has strongly condemned the ongoing crisis affecting dental students at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), stating that no student should suffer due to leadership failures.

"I had just assumed office—barely one year in—but I made it clear that children must not suffer because of systemic failure," Obi said, recalling his time as governor. I assured the Council I would take responsibility and build a teaching hospital within two years."

According to Obi, many doubted his promise at the time, but he ultimately delivered the Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Awka in just 18 months, leading to the restoration of accreditation and saving the careers of hundreds of medical students.

Drawing from that experience, he called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps by providing both financial and institutional support to UNICAL to resolve the crisis.

"The Vice Chancellor and her team must be supported to ensure that no student is victimised by a problem they did not create," Obi insisted. A Call for Prioritizing Education and Healthcare. Obi further warned against the continued neglect of the education and healthcare sectors, particularly while public funds are being wasted on non-productive ventures.

"At this critical time in our nation, we cannot afford to continue this downward trend of ignoring education and healthcare," he said. "Our children must not continue to lose their future in Nigeria."

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to systemic reform and national renewal:

"A New Nigeria is Possible."
